Careers and Placement Officer

West Dean College – Academic & Student Services

LOCATION: Chelsea Harbour, London (please note that the role will relocate to Bloomsbury, central London by September 2024)

HOURS: 35 hours per week (Hybrid option)

The Role

We are looking for a pro-active, motivated, and experienced Careers & Placement Officer, with a proven track record of success in the coordinating and delivery of university level career and placement services.

This critical role will enable West Dean to achieve its ambitious student employment targets and enhance the student experience within the College.

You’ll work with students and graduates to prepare them for future employment and a long-term professional career in the creative industries.  This will include ensuring that all routes, including creative portfolio and freelance pathways, are understood by students to increase their chances of success.  As such, it is anticipated that the postholder will have some specialist knowledge of working in the creative industries, with a focus on interior design and garden design.

Responsibilities:

Students

  • Coordinate and deliver a high-quality Careers & Placement Service to students.
  • Undertake 1-1 Careers Sessions for students on validated degree and diploma courses, providing in-depth advice on the range of career opportunities available.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring support to identify which path might be most appropriate based on a student’s individual preferences and skills.
  • Respond to all Student/Alumni enquiries about the Careers Service
  • Provide information for International Graduates about professional organisations and potential employers.
  • Ensure that all Student/Graduate Careers records are up to date on the Intranet.
  • Job opportunities, including placements and mentoring, from potential providers are reviewed and shared with appropriate Students.

Employers/Placements

  • Liaising and building relationships with potential employers and/or placement providers
  • Working closely with students and employers to facilitate work placement/work shadowing opportunities.
  • Act as single point of contact for student work placements

College Administration

  • Prepare reports on Careers Service activities for Board Meetings
  • Maintain awareness of current industry trends and activities and any relevant legislation relating to Careers or employment
  • To assist with the delivery of Open Days and other internal events.
  • To build and maintain excellent working relations, both internally within West Dean and with external partners and suppliers.
  • To carry out general administrative duties including routine answering of letters and emails, updating computer records and databases
  • To work flexibly as a member of the Academic and Student Services team and undertake any other duties as may be reasonably requested.

Who we are looking for:

  • Proven track record of success in delivery of university level career services.
  • Evidence of coaching and mentoring individuals to achieve their own goals and success.
  • An awareness of current issues in HE and graduate employment trends is essential.
  • Knowledge or experience of working in the creative industries, with a focus on interior design and garden design.
  • Strong communication, able to relay instructions and decisions clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience in a ‘student-facing’ role and able to communicate individually and to groups of diverse students.
  • A relationship builder, capable of managing various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Constantly looks for opportunities to improve performance, seeks out feedback, and embodies West Dean’s high standards.
  • Digitally savvy, ideally with experience using virtual meeting platforms (Microsoft Teams).
  • Professional and motivated.
  • A flexible attitude, unphased by unexpected change and ambiguity.
