About the role
The Data Scientist – KTP Associate will develop and apply in practice machine learning methods to build a neural network model predicting financial customer behaviour, directly using individual customer interactions. They will also develop novel and generally applicable machine learning methodologies for the analysis of variable-length, unevenly-spaced event sequences using Information Bottleneck methods, and maintain the open source repository containing the model. This is a collaborative Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Project between Wise Plc and School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary University of London, where the outcomes of the Data Scientist’s work will be used by Wise Plc to more effectively target new customers and offer services to existing ones.
Wise Plc is a financial services and technology company focusing on making international money transfers cheap, fair, and simple. Wise Plc’s multi-currency account helps over 11 million people and businesses manage their money across the world. Wise Plc’s services allow our customers to move money - send, spend, receive, pay and get paid -- in any currency. Wise Plc offers three main products to its customers: low-cost global money transfer and currency exchange services; the ability to hold balances in any combination of currencies; and a debit card linked to the balances.
You will have a PhD degree in Computer Science or Statistics or closely allied subject involving the development of machine learning methodology and subsequent application to the analysis of large scale data sets. Experience with autoencoder architectures and a solid understanding of Bayesian statistics are essential.
About the School
The School is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, which comprises of five schools and two institutes. The School comprises 85 academic staff and associate lecturers, 16 research assistants and 14 members of professional services staff. The School is home to around 80 PhD students, and approximately 1,000 undergraduates and 100 master level students.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London (~10% of time) and the Wise office in the Tea Building, Shoreditch High Street, London (~90% of time). It is a full time fixed term appointment for up to one year, with an expected start date of February 2024. Starting salary will be Grade 6, in the range of £52,549 - £55,483 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
