Overview of the role: 

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and student-centred Academic Skills Lecturer to provide a range of support activities in-person on campus and digitally via MS Teams.  

The successful candidate will support the Programme Leader to deliver an embedded curriculum of Academic Skills in our programmes in collaboration with the different schools and departments, as well as 1-1 sessions, guest lectures, small group workshops, and webinars. The successful candidate will support home and international undergraduate and postgraduate students to acquire the English and academic skills they need to be successful in their studies. They will also help to develop engaging resources that enhance students’ academic skills. Specific responsibilities will be agreed in line with the successful candidates’ skills set and experience.  

Main responsibilities: 

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Planning and delivering an embedded curriculum of Academic Skills Support in collaboration with the different schools and departments across the college. 
  • Planning and delivering impactful bespoke Academic Skills guest lectures across Regent’s portfolio, as per lecturer’s requests. 
  • Planning and delivering high-quality Academic Skills workshops, webinars and presentations to students and staff (in-person and digitally). 
  • Providing  1-1 guidance to support students in their assignments and keeping track of students’ engagement and progress. 
  • Supporting the Programme Leader to create resources and support materials.  
  • Liaising with academics and other members of staff, where necessary, to ensure students receive appropriate on-going academic skills support. 
  • Collaborating with other teams at Regent (e.g. Wellbeing, Inclusion, other schools) to support activities that enhance students’ experience, development, and success.  
  • Assessing the effectiveness of academic skills support against students’ needs and progress. 
  • Carrying out any other responsibilities as reasonably required by senior management (e.g. accurate attendance records, progress reports, monitoring reports, schemes of work, etc.).

Qualifications 

1. Relevant degree E

2. Teaching Qualification (e.g.: CELTA, DELTA, TESOL, TEFL, PGCE or equivalent) or demonstrable teaching experience. E

3. A Master’s degree or level 7 qualification. D

4. Membership of one of these professional bodies: D

  • PATOSS (full or associate membership)
  • BDA (full professional membership)
  • ADSHE (professional membership)
  • Dyslexia Guild (member, associate or fellow membership) 

5. Teaching Practice Certificate (e.g. from PATOSS or BDA) D

Knowledge and Experience  

6. Demonstrable teaching experience in FE or HE, especially working with mature students. E

7. Comprehensive understanding and experience teaching and supporting students with English for Academic Purposes and the Academic Skills needed for success in higher education. E

8. Excellent IT skills (MS Teams / Outlook / Word / PPT) and ability to support mature students to use these tools effectively in their studies. E

9. Outstanding interpersonal, presentation and written communication skills. E  

10. Strong organisation, flexibility, a calm approach under pressure, ability to work independently and as part of a team, attention to detail, and a proactive, solutions-focused mindset. E 

11. Awareness of appropriate SpLD/Dyslexia screening materials and the ability to undertake diagnostic assessments. D

12. Experience of interpreting diagnostic assessments and DSA Needs Assessment Reports. D
