A position is available for an independent and highly motivated individual to take part in the A4IM project (Affordable, Accessible, Adjustable and Accurate MR Imaging, see the project site). This is a EURAMET-funded consortium regrouping 19 participants throughout Europe including Universities, research institutes, metrology institutes and industries, and led by PTB Berlin, Germany.

A4IM is motivated by critical needs for more affordable and accessible MRI scanners for healthcare. Its overall goal is to establish affordable open-source low-field MRI systems covering hardware components, data acquisition and image reconstruction within the EURAMET network. This project aims to assess the reproducibility of the open-source OSI2 ONE MRI scanner (link here), to fully test and document the system and to establish open standards in these procedures, including software, methods and technical documentation. The system produced will be transparent, reproducible and open, by adopting open science practices throughout the entire project.

This position will be hosted by the AMT Centre, which is located within the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary campus and part of the University of Aberdeen School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition (SMMSN), and co-led by the School of Natural and Computing Sciences (NCS) and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Data and AI (ICDAI). SMMSN has a long history of developing Imaging technologies especially in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). In 1980, Aberdeen University performed the world’s first diagnostic MRI scan of a patient, using a scanner invented and built in Aberdeen. Based on this legacy, the University of Aberdeen continues to promote and push the boundaries of MRI technology to develop the next generation of scanners. NCS is a vibrant and dynamic centre, internationally renowned for excellence both in teaching and research. It comprises four academic units, namely: Chemistry, Computing Science, Mathematics and Physics. Computing Science currently has 34 members of academic staff, together with around 40 doctoral researchers and PhD students. ICDAI is one of the five University Interdisciplinary Centres that focuses on three main themes, i.e. Human-Centred AI, Data-Centric & Trustworthy AI, and AI for Climate and Sustainability. Established in 2022 ICDAI has seen extensive growth, culminating in some recent awards, such as the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training “SUSTAIN” and the AI in the Biosciences (AIBIO-UK) BBSRC Network.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6, 50% of £37,099 per annum, pro rata and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.

Informal enquiries should be made to Dr. Lionel Broche, Hall Family Lecturer in Medical Physics (l.broche@abdn.ac.uk).
