The School of Engineering Computing and Mathematics (SECAM) wish to appoint a Senior Computing Technician to provide teaching and research support.

You will work as part of a team and will be expected to support, maintain, and develop the specialist computing facilities and laboratories within the school.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical support to end-users regarding computer hardware, software, and account management.
  • Install, configure, and maintain computer systems, including desktops, servers, and networking equipment.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot hardware and software issues, perform necessary repairs, or escalate as and when necessary.
  • Ensure security and compliance standards are met for computing systems and data.
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls.
  • Monitor system performance and conduct routine maintenance tasks to ensure optimal operation.
  • Document and maintain accurate records of hardware and software inventory, configurations, and procedures.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and trends in the computing field and make recommendations for improvements.

You will need to demonstrate the relevant skills, a suitable amount of work experience and a commitment to technical delivery.  You will be expected to have a HND or Degree in a relevant subject area or equivalent or extensive experience in the subject.

You must have practical knowledge and experience in computing. Desirable experience includes: expertise in Windows server administration, programming knowledge (e.g. C#, C++, Java, JS, HTML, CSS, MySQL), experience supporting virtualisation platforms (e.g vmware esxi, hyperV), expertise in Linux operating system administration and experience with software packaging and deployment.

You must be proactive, safety conscious, and have the capability to approach activities in a professional manner.

SECAM is the home of our Mechanical, Marine, Electrical, Electronic, and Robotics Engineering subject disciplines, which together with Civil and Coastal Engineering, Navigation, Computing and Mathematical Sciences, provides a vibrant inter-disciplinary and collaborative environment, dedicated towards producing pioneering research but also graduates, with the necessary applied knowledge and skills to meet the demands of employers today and tomorrow.

This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week on a permanent basis.
