Job summary

The post holder will play a key role in the delivery of the Royal School of Mines (RSM)workshop service, providing support for research and teaching activities in the department. You will be part of an experienced team, designing, and manufacturing complex precision components and contributing to the assembly, installation and commissioning of specialist equipment. You will work on a range of projects supporting the research groups and teaching laboratories in the department of Materials.

Duties and responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

To undertake projects to deadline, providing expert advice on the design, construction and manufacture of complex components from a variety of materials to a high standard using a combination of manual and CNC machines, to a high level of accuracy and quality. Assist and deputise for the workshop manager as necessary.

  • Construct and develop instruments from own designs, drawings and verbal instructions to support the aims of research groups and teaching laboratories
  • Provide expert knowledge and expertise to modify apparatus
  • Provide expert advice to staff and students in the development, design, construction, and application of equipment.
  • Use technical knowledge and experience to conceptualise and interpret the requirements of staff and students
  • Produce engineering drawings and 3D models using design and drafting software such as SolidWorks. Ensure that components are manufactured and machined within the tolerances specified by the design.
  • Organise work output to meet research/teaching project deadlines and to support research/teaching project objectives by adjusting priorities as necessary to accommodate new workloads or changes in circumstances or problems.
  • Promote safe workplace practices and conduct in the Workshop, taking a lead on legal and Health & Safety compliance standards.

Essential requirements

Candidates/post holders will be expected to demonstrate the following:

  • Educated to at least BTEC HNC or equivalent, with completion of a recognised engineering apprenticeship-training scheme.
  • Significant experience in mechanical engineering workshop design and production, preferably within a research or engineering development environment.
  • Experience of the design and construction of complex mechanical systems and high precision components.
  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of research equipment.
  • Good general IT skills, use of SolidWorks and CADCAM software.
  • Experience or willingness to engage in CPD around machining in Advanced Materials.
  • Detailed knowledge of mechanical workshop practices and workshop instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of CNC machines and CNC programming.
  • A thorough understanding of Workplace Health & Safety regulations and procedures.
