Location: Hybrid role, with three days per week on site at the Chelsea campus and flexibility for remote working. Occasional travel to the Sutton site or partner institutions may be required.

Job overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Research Project Manager to lead delivery of the NIHR i4i (Invention for Innovation) Product Development Award project: 

“HOLO-AIM: Holographic surgical guidance using Artificial Intelligence and Mixed Reality for safer and more efficient surgery.”

This flagship translational collaboration between The Royal Marsden Hospital, Imperial College London, and industry partner Holocare will develop and clinically validate an AI-powered mixed-reality surgical guidance platform that integrates real-time imaging, computer vision and workflow tools to improve surgical precision and patient safety.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will provide operational leadership that will ensure the timely progression, coordination and control of the project with pre-defined objectives, work plans, milestones, deliverables and resources. They will lead project organisation across multiple organisations, ensuring projects remain aligned to the aims and objectives; enable and monitor meaningful stakeholder engagement that contributes to the realisation of project outputs/products; ensure resources are deployed for timely delivery of activities; oversee processes, systems and management structure that promotes work of the highest quality, and managing and mitigating risks to project. 

The secondary function of this role is to contribute to the development of research funding applications led by RM/ICR to external funding bodies (e.g., NIHR and MRC).

Key responsibilities:

  • Coordinating delivery, progress monitoring, and risk management across all work packages.
  • Supporting governance, contracts, and IP/data management with partner research offices and legal teams.
  • Overseeing project finances and NIHR-compliant reporting (approximately £2 million budget).
  • Engaging stakeholders and PPIE partners to ensure patient perspectives inform design and evaluation.
  • Planning dissemination and stakeholder-engagement activities to maximise project impact.
  • Contributing to the preparation of future translational research proposals to major UK and international funders (e.g. NIHR, MRC, Innovate UK, UKRI, Horizon Europe, European Innovation Council)

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Degree qualification in a relevant subject, preferably in the medical or biological sciences or equivalent experience of working in clinical/health research.
  • Project management qualification (eg PRINCE 2) or equivalent experience such as managing clinical/health research projects/trials within the NHS.

Desirable criteria

  • Higher degree qualification (e.g. MSc or PhD) in a relevant subject, preferably in the medical or biological sciences

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working across multi-organisational (Higher Education Institutions, NHS, commercial organisations and others) teams within a matrix structure.
  • Experience in operational leadership, including monitoring of multi-party research and/or innovation projects.
  • Experience in reporting to project funders and tracking complex budgets.
  • Experience of protocol writing.
  • Experience of data management

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of inputting to research funding applications with the aim of developing/translating technologies into patient benefit
  • Experience of designing and delivering training
