As Optometry at University of Huddersfield continues to expand and develop, an exciting opportunity has arisen with the creation of the role of Subject Lead in Optometry. The Department seeks to expand its provision with the newly-validated MOptom and develop additional qualifications in optometry.

The Department is part of the School of Applied Sciences, which includes the subject areas of Pharmacy and Life and Physical Sciences. Optometry enjoys purpose-built and fully-equipped teaching and clinical areas, part of a ~£18.2 million development in the School of Applied Sciences in 2019. The Department hosts, unique to optometric education in the UK, the joint-venture clinical enterprise, University Valli Opticians, where students develop key clinical skills within an operating optical business. The Department also hosts a dedicated research centre: Centre for Vision across the Life Span (CVLS), that includes facilities for research in visual psychophysics, accommodation and myopia, and retinal imaging and other areas.

As Subject Lead in Optometry, you will be responsible for providing leadership and direction in the development of optometry education at Huddersfield. The department has numerous professional relationships, including the unique collaboration with the Valli group, which offers the successful applicant opportunities for developing the department’s educational, research and enterprise activities.

In addition, you will be an engaging teacher, keen to conduct high quality research and who can contribute to our strategic ambitions, both at the Department and University levels.

With a PhD in a relevant area and professional registration as an optometrist with the GOC, you will have a commitment to an innovative student-centred learning experience. You will have good knowledge of issues in contemporary optometric practice and an understanding of the developments and changes in the education of optometrists. Experience in a management and leadership role within higher education is also required.

You should have Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, or the capacity to obtain this within 12 months of appointment.
