The Institute of Computing for Climate Science (ICCS), based in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, is seeking to appoint a Communications Coordinator to develop and deliver a strategic and effective communications programme, raising the profile of the Institute's world-leading research at the intersection of computing and climate science.
Climate science increasingly relies on complex computational models to advance our understanding of the planet. ICCS brings together researchers in software engineering, artificial intelligence, data science, and high-performance computing to support the next generation of climate modelling. The Communications Coordinator will play a key role in communicating this work to a wide range of academic, industry, policy, and public audiences.
The post holder will define, design and implement a multi-channel communications strategy for ICCS. This will include managing the Institute's digital presence (website and social media), creating engaging written and visual content, coordinating public engagement activity, and supporting internal communications. Managed by the Programme Manager, the role sits within the ICCS Operations Team and involves close collaboration with research teams, professional services colleagues, and communications professionals across the University and external partners.
The role holder will be responsible for the development of high-quality content for a range of platforms and formats, including articles, press releases, web content, social media posts, videos, and presentations . They will also support the ICCS Operations Team on drafting funder reports, ensuring accurate reporting and quality assurance through web and social analytics. Experience with digital content creation and analytics tools will be essential.
The role will also involve cultivating strong relationships with communications contacts and university press offices, drafting and disseminating press releases, and advising scientific staff on media engagement. A monthly ICCS newsletter will be produced by the post holder, with support from colleagues, and distributed to a growing external network including research partners, funders and stakeholders.
The successful candidate will also lead on public engagement activities, developing and delivering events, activities and projects that increase awareness and understanding of ICCS research. This includes organising open days, outreach activities and supporting seminars and workshops.
Applicants should have experience in managing communications within a research or higher education environment, excellent writing and editorial skills, and the ability to communicate complex topics to diverse audiences. Familiarity with scientific communication, particularly in climate or computational science, is highly desirable.
This is a part-time position, offered at 60% FTE. We welcome applications from individuals who wish to be considered for flexible working arrangements.
Fixed-term: This post is funded for two years initially, with funding available until 31 July 2027.
