De Montfort University (DMU) is a forward-thinking institution driven by innovation, inclusion, and a deep commitment to delivering outstanding digital services. Since the launch of our Digital Transformation Strategy in 2022, we’ve implemented major infrastructure upgrades, embedded user-centred design practices, and laid the foundations for a modern, agile university. This transformation is ongoing, and with so much still to achieve, it’s a particularly exciting time to join us. At DMU, you’ll contribute to meaningful, lasting change that supports staff and students alike, all within a vibrant and ambitious university community.
Faculty / Directorate
The Digital and Technology Directorate plays a central role in reshaping how the university delivers digital value. We are modernising our services through cloud adoption, reduction of technical debt, and the implementation of a product operating model—still novel in higher education but increasingly vital to public sector innovation. Our approach combines agile delivery with operational excellence, ensuring services are both resilient and user-focused. From AI and automation to infrastructure, identity, and security, the Directorate is focused on creating streamlined, future-ready services that support academic and professional excellence across DMU.
Role
We are seeking a strategically minded and technically accomplished Cloud Infrastructure Architect to design and implement robust hybrid solutions that bridge on-premise systems and cloud technologies. At DMU, we adopt a "Cloud First" approach, informed by "Cloud Smart" thinking, and this role is critical in helping us deliver on that vision. You will lead the design, development, and optimisation of secure, scalable infrastructure platforms that support business continuity, digital transformation, and future innovation.
As the university continues to evolve its hybrid hosting model, you’ll oversee the integration of legacy platforms, modern SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS services, and cloud-native solutions. You will collaborate across technical and non-technical teams to deliver infrastructure roadmaps that align with strategic objectives, embedding “security by design” and sustainability into all aspects of architectural planning. From guiding migration projects to shaping campus-wide smart infrastructure and automation, this role offers the chance to leave a lasting mark on a digitally ambitious university.
Working closely with the Head of Platforms and Connectivity, the wider Platforms team, and other architects in the practice, you will contribute to the collaborative delivery of our hybrid cloud adoption strategy.
Ideal Candidate
You will bring substantial experience designing and delivering hybrid cloud infrastructure, ideally in complex or regulated environments. You’ll be highly proficient in integrating on-premise systems with public cloud platforms and have a deep understanding of technologies such as virtualisation, containerisation, serverless computing, and storage architecture. Your architectural expertise will be matched by a solid grasp of modern security frameworks, risk management, and sustainable infrastructure practices.
Excellent communication skills are essential, along with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear plans for diverse audiences. Experience with cloud governance, migration strategies, and stakeholder engagement at all levels is important. Industry-recognised certifications (e.g., Azure, AWS, TOGAF, VMware, Kubernetes) are desirable, along with a strong commitment to innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
