Job Ref: 1004976

Location: John Innes Centre, Norwich, UK.

The John Innes Centre (JIC) seeks a talented, motivated individual as a proteomics specialist to serve the growing needs of proteomics-based technology at JIC, which is a globally recognized, independent research institute specializing in plant and microbial sciences.

About the Proteomics Platform Group:

The position is within the JIC Proteomics Platform team, which provides a comprehensive proteomics service to JIC, the wider Norwich Research Park, and external partners. The platform houses state-of-the-art mass spectrometers, including a Thermo Orbitrap Eclipse Tribrid with a FAIMS PRO DUO interface and a MALDI source for imaging. Additional instruments include a Bruker MALDI-TOF and a Waters Synapt G2-Si Q-TOF, supporting a wide range of analyses—from individual proteins to complex samples, isotope labelling, and ion mobility. The platform offers collaboration, service, and advice across academic and commercial users.

The role:

We seek an enthusiastic proteomics specialist to join the Platform in a full-time, indefinite post. Working with the platform manager, the specialist will support proteomics projects, including instrument operation and maintenance, sample preparation, method optimisation, data analysis, client interaction, and training. Responsibilities include operation of advanced mass spectrometers, nano-LC systems, and data pipelines, as well as assisting research groups with experimental design, data processing, and publication support.

The ideal candidate:

The ideal candidate will have substantial proteomics experience and a PhD in a relevant field, or equivalent research background. Hands-on experience with mass spectrometry/LC-MS for detailed protein characterization and prior experience with quantitative MS experiments are essential.

Knowledge of protein separation and enrichment sciences, and interest in protein structure, function, and interactions are required. Proficiency in operating advanced Orbitrap, MALDI, and Q-TOF mass spectrometers and associated LC systems is highly desirable.

The candidate should be skilled in preparing high-quality samples for advanced experiments such as protein quantification and isobaric labelling. Experience with proteomics data analysis software (e.g. Mascot, Proteome Discoverer, MaxQuant, MSFragger, DIA-NN, Skyline), large dataset handling, and statistical analysis is desirable, as is familiarity with mass spectrometry imaging.

While experience in instrument maintenance is preferred, full training will be provided across all relevant instruments and techniques.

This role meets the criteria for a visa application, and we encourage all qualified candidates to apply.  Please contact the Human Resources Team if you have any questions regarding your application or visa options.
