Research Fellow - AI Engineering Lead – PEACEPLUS ONEHEALTH Project

ATU’s JANUS Research Centre for HPC, AI and Emerging Technologies is seeking a highly motivated AI Engineering Lead (Research Fellow) to lead ATU’s AI Engineering team within the EU-funded ONEHEALTH project, a €9.85M PEACEPLUS cross-border programme. ONEHEALTH brings together Catalyst, Queen’s University Belfast, ATU, Tyndall, University of Galway, and HIRANI to create an AI-driven Life & Health Sciences ecosystem.

As the senior technical lead for ATU’s contribution to the AI Accelerator strand, the Engineering Lead will provide technical leadership, supervision, and mentorship for the Republic of Ireland engineering team (PD2, PD1, RA), ensuring delivery of high-quality prototypes and demonstrators with SMEs in human and agri-health, while also contributing to ATU’s role in the Deep Research strand through collaboration with cross-border academic partners to maximise innovation impact.

Please note: The postholder will be based at the ATU Donegal, Letterkenny Campus.

Essential Qualifications

Minimum

• PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related discipline, together with relevant postdoctoral or applied research/industry experience,

OR

substantial and demonstrable professional experience (7+ years) at a comparable level of responsibility, including leadership of applied AI/ML projects with industry, health, or agri-health partners.

• Proven track record of delivering applied AI/ML solutions, including prototypes, demonstrators, or deployed systems.

• Evidence of high-quality outputs such as peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, or industry-standard deliverables.

• Experience of supervising junior researchers/engineers and leading project teams.

• Strong programming and applied AI/ML development skills (Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, etc.).

• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with a record of working with SMEs or innovation-focused organisations.

Desirable

• Experience in SME innovation or Accelerator programmes.

• Track record in commercialisation, technology transfer, or industry collaboration.

• Knowledge of regulatory and ethical frameworks around AI in health/agri-health.

• Experience deploying AI/ML solutions on high-performance computing (HPC), cloud, or edge platforms (e.g. Dell NativeEdge, containerisation, orchestration, accelerator hardware).

• Familiarity with cross-border or EU-funded project delivery.
