Postdoctoral Researcher - Senior AI Engineer – PEACEPLUS ONEHEALTH Project

ATU’s JANUS Research Centre for HPC, AI and Emerging Technologies is seeking a highly motivated Senior AI Engineer (PostDoc PD2) for ATU’s AI Engineering team within the EU-funded ONEHEALTH project, a €9.85M PEACEPLUS cross-border programme. ONEHEALTH brings together Catalyst, Queen’s University Belfast, ATU, Tyndall, University of Galway, and HIRANI to create an AI-driven Life & Health Sciences ecosystem.

The Senior AI Engineer will play a central role in ATU’s AI Engineering team for the ONEHEALTH AI Accelerator strand, taking ownership of technical work packages and guiding the design and implementation of SME-focused AI/ML solutions in the human and agri-health domains . The postholder may also contribute to cross-border Deep Research activities where appropriate.

Please note: The postholder will be based at the ATU Donegal, Letterkenny Campus.

Essential Qualifications

Minimum

• PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related discipline, plus at least 2 years relevant postdoctoral or industry experience,

OR

Honours Bachelor’s (NFQ Level 8) or Master’s (Level 9) in a relevant discipline plus 5+ years significant applied professional experience in AI/ML project delivery, including evidence of leadership or independent responsibility for projects.

• Proven ability to design and implement applied AI/ML solutions, including prototypes, demonstrators, or deployed systems.

• Evidence of high-quality outputs such as peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, or industry-standard deliverables.

• Strong programming and applied AI/ML development skills (Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, etc.).

• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with a record of working with SMEs or innovation-focused organisations.

Desirable

• Experience mentoring junior engineers or researchers.

• Familiarity with ethical AI, GDPR, and regulatory frameworks.

• Familiarity with HPC, cloud, or edge environments for AI/ML development and deployment.

• Previous involvement in EU or cross-border collaborative projects.
