Salary: £36,433 to £41,833
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 3rd November 2025

About Us

UCL Mechanical Engineering has been shaping engineering education for over 170 years. As the birthplace of the UK’s first Professor of Mechanical Principles and a pioneer in hands-on lab training, we continue to lead in research and innovation. Our department tackles diverse challenges—from sustainable shipping and advanced propulsion systems to biomedical engineering and materials science—supported by world-class academics and facilities.

About the Role

We are seeking a proactive and well-organised individual to support the Biomaterials Processing Laboratory (BPL). This is a hands-on role within a dynamic research environment, offering training and opportunities to grow your technical expertise.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining lab safety and cleanliness, managing PPE, consumables, and waste
  • Conducting daily inspections and ensuring risk assessments are up to date
  • Providing inductions and equipment training to staff, students, and visitors
  • Supporting equipment maintenance, including gas bottle changes and PAT testing
  • Operating and maintaining cleanroom and lab equipment such as spinning rigs, microscopes, UV-visible spectrometers, high-speed cameras, and SEM

You will assist with research projects across teams, including:

  • Nanoparticle creation for drug delivery using EHD spraying
  • Hydroxyapatite coating on titanium alloys
  • SEM sample preparation and analysis
  • Learning and supporting cell culture techniques

You will also contribute to group meetings, publications, and progress reports, and help implement safe working practices. Additional responsibilities may include acting as a First Aider or Fire Marshal. Sustainability is integral to our work, and you’ll support UCL’s environmental goals through your role.

About You

We welcome applicants who are practical, motivated, and eager to contribute to a thriving research environment. Whether you hold formal qualifications (e.g., five GCSEs including English and Maths) or have gained experience through hands-on roles, your enthusiasm and reliability are key.

You should:

  • Enjoy technical tasks and be confident using tools and equipment
  • Be able to explain procedures clearly and safely to others
  • Have strong communication and time management skills
  • Be self-motivated, adaptable, and willing to learn new skills

Experience in educational or lab settings is desirable, as is an understanding of health and safety. Above all, we’re looking for someone curious, dependable, and ready to grow within a collaborative research team.

FURTHER INFORMATION

With the support of examples please include a supporting statement with your application illustrating how your experience aligns with the criteria.
