The Wellbeing Service is inclusive, innovative & anticipatory, delivering integrated services that enable and empower students to realise their academic potential and thrive in their student experience while at BSUL (Canary Wharf).
The Wellbeing Advisor role is responsible for supporting students who present with a range of wellbeing issues. This includes providing effective triage & assessment for student wellbeing enquiries and referrals, undertaking initial risk screenings and safety planning, and managing a student caseload that delivers wellbeing interventions, advice and support.
The post holder will be responsible for managing a varied and at times demanding case load, working as part of a team according to structured departmental protocols.
The post holder will be expected to undertake and participate in project work throughout the year and be available for some evening & weekend working on a rota basis.
Key Responsibilities
Respond effectively and empathetically to students presenting in emotional distress, delivering appropriate interventions that focus on safety planning, self-advocacy and enablement, referring to clinical or other specialist services and support where necessary.
Work collaboratively with colleagues across SWS and the University to enable the implementation of appropriate interventions and support for students.
Work in accordance with agreed rotas providing student appointments, triaging student and staff enquiries, and managing resultant case work as appropriate.
Process sensitive & confidential student data effectively and efficiently, including thorough and accurate case notes to agreed quality standards and GDPR.
Lead the delivery and coordination of enhanced support measures for pregnant students and those where personal circumstances are impacting on students’ academic progress.
Respond to student submissions of bullying, harassment & discrimination incidents via the University’s Report & Support system and other referral pathways, providing timely intervention, support and advice. This will include in some cases being the first point of contact for student disclosures, managing effective ‘in the moment’ discussions to de-escalate initial distress, assessing risk, sensitively exploring further support options and using professional judgment to determine whether referrals or further referral to other specialist services is required (e.g. Safeguarding).
Contribute to the development of SWS to ensure the services remain fit for purpose, align with the University’s strategic objectives & contribute to enabling student success.
Participate & assist with projects across the year, such as evaluation exercises, data analysis, open and induction days and graduation.
Carry out any other duties within the grade of the post as required or requested.
About You
Essential
Educated to degree level or equivalent work experience.
Experience of delivering pastoral care, welfare & wellbeing services, including working to assess needs, levels of risk and triaging to appropriate support.
Excellent IT, interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills and demonstrable experience of working within a busy team.
Ability to deal calmly and sensitively with difficult or distressed people to effectively assess risk and co-ordinate support, while maintaining professional boundaries.
Commitment and understanding of equality, diversity & inclusion issues, including an ability to work well with people of all ages and backgrounds.
Desirable
Relevant postgraduate qualification or professional experience/registration.
Experience of working within a student support setting in HE or FE.
