The Discipline of Journalism and Media within the School of English, Media and Creative Arts at University of Galway is a dynamic and ambitious unit with more than 600 students across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Journalism and Global Media. Global Media is the largest area, offering future-focused teaching that blends critical media theory with hands-on practice across digital and social media, podcasting, television production, and media industries. Journalism is central to the Discipline, playing a vital role in supporting democracy, accountability, and informed public discourse. Our programmes also include specialist strands in data, strategic and humanitarian communication, and climate communication, equipping students to address global challenges through impactful storytelling. The Discipline is outward-looking, with strong industry links and a commitment to innovation, global engagement, and public interest media.

Applications are now invited for the position of Lecturer with a specialisation in Global Media Studies. The successful candidate will be a research-active scholar with a track record of, or strong potential for, internationally recognised publications and engagement with global research networks. They should demonstrate the capacity to attract external research funding and to contribute to the Discipline’s growing international research profile. We welcome applicants who can contribute across the broad field of media studies, including critical theory, global perspectives, and new and emerging developments in the discipline. While our strategic priorities include the following areas, applications are not limited to them:

  • Media, culture, and society, with a focus on popular culture, fandom, gender, identity, race, and representation;
  • Media and the Global South, including Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, migration, diaspora, postcolonial perspectives, or activism for social change;
  • Media and sustainability, spanning climate and science communication, environmental narratives, and sustainable futures; or
  • Media, democracy, and governance, addressing disinformation, platform governance, artificial intelligence, innovation, and the political economy of media industries.

As a Lecturer B appointment, this is a balanced teaching and research role. The successful candidate will teach across all our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. They will sustain an active and internationally visible research agenda, and contribute to the administration and development of the Discipline and School.
