Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

We are seeking to appoint a proactive, organised and student-focused individual to join our Student Events & Communities team as a Student Events Assistant.

This exciting role will support the planning, organisation and delivery of a diverse range of events and activities that enhance the student experience and foster a strong sense of belonging at Surrey. Working closely with the Student Events Coordinator, you will help create a vibrant, inclusive campus community through social, cultural and educational events across the academic year.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Assist the Student Events Coordinators to plan and coordinate a varied programme of events and activities that respond to student needs and interests.
  • Help design and deliver programming that promotes cultural awareness, personal growth, wellbeing and community engagement.
  • Ensure events are inclusive, accessible and aligned with University values, policies and risk management protocols.
  • Work collaboratively with students and key stakeholders to co-create events that are relevant, engaging and impactful.
  • Support the planning and delivery of Welcome activities, including Move-In Weekend, registration and orientation, helping to provide a smooth and welcoming arrival experience for new students.
  • Contribute to the promotion of events and activities, including preparing content for social media, newsletters and other communication channels to maximise student participation.

About you

We’re looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a busy events calendar.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage with a wide range of students, colleagues and partners.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for student experience, community building and delivering high-quality events.
  • Experience creating promotional materials and content (e.g., posters, social media graphics, event copy) to support effective event marketing.

Experience in event planning, student engagement, creating promotional content or working in a higher education or customer-focused environment would be an advantage, but we are equally keen to hear from applicants who can demonstrate transferable skills and a passion for working with students.
