The Department of Humanities is a community of researchers, teachers, students, and support staff working together on cutting edge issues in contemporary culture. The history subject area is an integral part of the Department and wider University with popular single and joint-honours undergraduate degrees, an MSc History and an interdisciplinary MSc Diplomacy and International Security, and a vibrant PhD community. History is ranked 1st in Scotland in its category in NSS 2025 for overall student experience, and is in the top ten in the UK in The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026 and the Guardian University Guide 2026. Our teaching is internationally recognised and is concentrated around key themes in politics and society; global conflict, empires and diplomacy; health and medicine; and oral history.

We seek to appoint a Teaching Associate to join our history subject team, on a 1.0 FTE fixed-term maternity cover contract, with relevant teaching experience, to deliver teaching across the undergraduate curriculum and the MSc Diplomacy and International Security.

We welcome applicants with specialisms particularly in the history of the Soviet Union, the Cold War, twentieth century Europe, and the history of modern diplomacy and intelligence and security, who can contribute to modules in these areas at UG and PG levels, and supervise MSc dissertations in international history with interdisciplinary dimensions (international relations and international law).

The role involves delivering a range of established teaching modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with guidance as required, in a manner that supports a research- informed approach to student learning; undertaking student assessment and examination activities, including the provision of appropriate feedback to students; supervision of students as required, providing direction, support and guidance and contributing to curriculum development activities.

To be considered for this role it is essential you have a relevant honours degree and PhD (or equivalent professional experience), and have demonstrable teaching experience. You will have the ability to plan and organise your own workload effectively, work in a team environment and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences. Experience of curriculum development and student supervision would be advantageous.

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Dr Niall Whelehan, History Subject Leader at niall.whelehan@strath.ac.uk. Please note the university will be closed on 4 May for a public holiday.

Initial interviews have been scheduled for 10/06/2026.
