About us:

The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine is seeking a motivated lecturer in Medical Education. As the appointed candidate, you will be an enthusiastic educator with an outstanding record of excellence and the ability to inspire and innovate in higher education. You will provide academic and pastoral support to students and work closely with colleagues across the Faculty and wider university.

About the role:

This non-clinical role is for an experienced medical educator to support the design, delivery and quality of small group learning across the GKT curriculum. The appointee will have specific responsibilities in the values-based clinical practice vertical theme, including academic supervision of our patient educator programme, and supporting values-based SSCs and scholarly projects.

Teaching Delivery  

  • Contribute to the delivery of small group sessions in line with expertise, with primary focus on patient educator sessions, clinical communication, cultural competence & interprofessional learning 
  • Facilitation of large group patient educator sessions 
  • Design and deliver values-based SSC and scholarly projects in line with expertise  
  • Promote a culture that supports a collaborative and compassionate learning environment  

Working with Patient Educators          

  • With the support of the Small Group Learning Lead, be the primary academic contact and co-ordinator of the patient educator programme, responsible for delivery and quality assurance of patient educator sessions, and the recruitment, management, and training of patient educators 
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive and respectful environment for our patient educator partners 

Teaching Design and Development 

  • Work with the Small Group Learning Lead, to develop and deliver initiatives around small group learning design, including but not limited to exploring opportunities to integrate patient educators into the curriculum 
  • Work with values-based clinical practice leads to ensure that curriculum mapping tools are accurate and up to date, across the MBBS programmes 
  • Develop Pedagogical research output commensurate with the area of practice. 

Faculty Development 

  • Work with others in Faculty Development roles to deliver sessions on small group learning and working with patient partners 

Assessment  

  • Engage with the Assessment Team and contribute to exam item writing/design and assessment where appropriate 
  • Work with relevant colleagues to ensure that student attendance and engagement in small group learning sessions is appropriately captured in the student record 

Engagement with the School / Faculty 

  • Contribute to wider school activities (e.g. admissions interviews, Personal Tutoring) 
  • Stay up to date with the current curriculum and changes that occur  
  • Remain up to date with EDI and unconscious bias training  
  • Remain up to date with student feedback training  
  • Undertake annual educational appraisal

This is a full-time, and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you:

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills & experience:

Essential criteria

  1. Undergraduate degree in health, psychology or related subject area. 
  2. Knowledge and understanding of undergraduate medical education.
  3. Experience of small group learning delivery.
  4. Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), including the ability to give high-quality constructive feedback.
  5. Experience of working with patients, patient education partners or role in public engagement.
  6. Ability to work effectively, respectfully, and sympathetically with students, colleagues and patient partners from diverse backgrounds. 
  7. Excellent organisation skills.
  8. Demonstration of a strong commitment to embedding compassionate care, critical thinking & social impact into medicine.
