Salary: £30,993 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract

Closes: 6th July 2026

The colleges propose to appoint an 11-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Early Modern French from September 2026 to August 2027, based at Wadham College and Oriel College. This is a temporary, fixed-term position to fulfil a current teaching need arising from a period of leave being taken by Dr Alessandra Aliosi.

The lecturer will be required to give an average of eleven hours per week of tutorials during the eight-week term (six for Wadham, five for Oriel). They are also expected to be available during both term and for some periods of the students’ vacations to offer organizational, pastoral, and admissions support. The colleges admit an average of sixteen undergraduates per annum to study French (ten at Wadham, six at Oriel), either alone or in combination with a second Modern Language or in joint schools combination with Classics, English, History, Linguistics, or Philosophy.

Key duties include arranging teaching, pastoral care of undergraduate students, setting and marking collections (termly college examinations), attending college meetings, and taking part in the undergraduate admissions exercise.

The lecturer will be expected to take responsibility for teaching the following for both colleges: topics in Paper III (Short Texts) and Paper IV (French Narrative Fiction) to first-year students, topics in FHS Paper VII (Early Modern Literature 1530-1800) and Paper X (Early Modern Prescribed Authors 1530-1800) to second- and final-year students. They will also be responsible for teaching grammar and translation into English to various year groups on behalf of Wadham.

It is expected that the successful candidate will have proven teaching experience relevant to the subject range to be covered. The successful applicant will be asked to provide proof of right to work in the UK before the post can be confirmed. Please note that the stipend offered for this post means that the colleges are not in a position to sponsor a Skilled Worker visa.

The stipend will be on a scale from £30,993 per annum, subject to revision in line with national adjustments to University teachers’ salaries. The position is superannuable under USS. The lecturer will be a member of the Colleges’ Senior Common Rooms, will have shared use of rooms for teaching, and will be entitled to a total of sixteen meals a week, when the kitchens are open, free of charge. The lecturer will also be entitled to apply for a total of £1173 in research funds per annum.

Applications, consisting of a covering letter (detailing the candidate’s suitability for the post) and a curriculum vitae, should be emailed to tutorial@wadham.ox.ac.uk by noon on Monday 6th July. Applicants should ask two referees to e-mail references directly to tutorial@wadham.ox.ac.uk by the same date. It is likely that interviews for this position will be held during the week commencing Monday 20th July.
