The Role
We are recruiting for the role of Science Technician Education to join our technical service as part of an integrated University-wide technical team. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make an impact as part of the established team supporting the practical areas in science for both undergraduate and postgraduate students in a classroom-based learning for Primary and Secondary provision in the School of Education.
The role involves supporting the setup and use of equipment in specialist university facilities. Key responsibilities will include contributing to the day-to-day running and maintenance of the teaching workshops and the labs, preparation and setting out of equipment for practical teaching, supporting staff and students in the use of specialist resources and shared responsibility for safely clearing away resources at the end of taught sessions.
You will ensure that materials are ordered, prepared, and available to support practical teaching, and you should display a good working knowledge of health and safety in a technical environment. The successful candidate will advise on health & safety issues, ensuring that COSHH and CLEAPSS guidelines are followed, maintain information for risk assessments, keep health & safety records up to date, and undertake basic inductions and checks as awareness of health and safety procedures and practices when working with specialist spaces and equipment is essential.
The successful candidate will ideally have skills and experience in a range of practical and technical skills in Science Education with a good working knowledge of primary and secondary school technologies. Previous experience of working as a science technician in an educational setting would be advantageous.
The role supports practical activity in the School of Education, and the successful candidate will work both within a team but also independently, prioritising work in a busy environment. You will have opportunities to contribute ideas to practical lesson planning and to support the development of engaging teaching materials and resources. The role offers scope for creative input within the department, particularly in supporting high-quality practical learning.
The role will require manual handling of equipment, and the successful candidate should demonstrate willingness to be flexible in duties undertaken, and commitment to continuing professional development. You will be flexible and proactive with a hands-on approach. You will demonstrate and provide a professional, helpful, and responsive service to students, academic staff, colleagues, and visitors, ensuring that technical support is delivered in a clear, approachable, and effective manner.
You will liaise closely with academic colleagues, including the Heads of Primary and Secondary Science, to ensure effective technical support for teaching, learning, and practical science activities. You will work with academic staff to understand the purpose of practical activities and provide suitable technical advice, alternatives, or adaptations where required.
You will work under the overall direction of the Technical Manager and must be able to work effectively as part of the Education & Engineering Technical team in AV & Technical Resources.
This position is available full-time.
