The Role

We are recruiting to the role of Technical Assistant (Education) to join our technical service as part of an integrated University-wide technical team. The post holder will have the opportunity to make an impact as part of the established team supporting the following broad practical areas: Design and Technology (DT), Food Technology, Art, Science, and Maths in the School of Education. The post holder will predominantly work within DT, Food Technology and Art areas, while working flexibly across science and maths areas to provide support as required to meet operational needs and priorities within the School of Education.

Key responsibilities will include contributing to the day-to-day running and maintenance of the teaching workshops and labs, preparation and setting out of equipment for practical teaching, supporting staff in the use of specialist resources and shared responsibility for safely clearing away resources at the end of taught sessions. You will ensure that materials are ordered, prepared and available to support practical teaching and you should display a good working knowledge of health and safety in a technical environment.

The successful candidate will ideally have skills and experience in a variety of DT, Art and food technology equipment and workshop machinery, but full training will be provided if needed. You will be flexible and proactive with a hands-on approach. You will have experience of delivering excellent customer service with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Previous experience of providing technical support in a similar environment is desirable.

You will liaise closely with academic colleagues to ensure effective technical support for teaching, learning, and practical activities. You will work with academic staff to understand the purpose of practical activities and provide suitable technical advice, alternatives, or adaptations where required.

You will work under the overall direction of the Technical Manager and must be able to work effectively as part of the Education and Engineering Technical team in AV and Technical Resources. Whilst this role will predominantly work within School of Education, you will be part of a community of Technicians in the Audio Visual and Technical Resources, that support teaching and learning across the University, ensuring a supportive network of comparably skilled individuals.
