Full-Time Fixed Term positions for 2 years each, starting January 2019

Research Assistant salary range: £33,380 to £35,061 per annum

Research Associate salary range: £37,904 to £45,547 per annum*

Applicants are invited to apply for two new vacancies at either Research Assistant (pre-doctoral) or Research Associate (post-doctoral) levels for robotics and navigation. The Hamlyn Centre is internationally renowned for robotics and underpinning technologies in mechatronics, AI, control and human-robot interaction. Focusing on technological innovation but with a strong emphasis on translation and direct societal benefits, the centre is at the forefront of research in imaging, sensing and robotics for addressing real world challenges. 

The vacancies are created by a major EPSRC grant on Future AI and Robotics for Space (FAIR-SPACE). It brings together six UK university champions in Robotics and AI (RAI) supported by a significant number of national and international project partners representing major space companies, agencies, research institutions as well as cross-sectorial RAI organizations. FAIR-SPACE’s vision is to establish an international centre of excellence in space RAS that ensures the UK is recognised as a global leader in the field. To achieve this, we will integrate world-class academic and industrial capabilities across the UK behind a series of use-inspired research challenges, addressing UK national priorities in orbital manipulators, autonomous planetary vehicles, and robotic support for manned exploration.

We are looking for outstanding applicants in any of the following areas of research:

  • Robot manipulation and grasping, as well as mechatronics, control and tactile sensing
  • Robotic vision, augmented reality and real-time navigation

Experience in system integration and practical space deployment would be an advantage. Applicants with strong hands on skills in mechatronics, control, modelling, vision and navigationi are preferred.

For a Research Assistant level position, you must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.  For a Research Associate position, you must have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in related disciplines. You will need to have considerable experience in interdisciplinary research and managing large integrated development projects.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £33,380 to £35,061 per annum.

Applicants with strong experience and a proven track record in one or more of the above research areas are encouraged to apply. A high level of analytical and computing skills is required.  Preference will be given to applicants with a proven research record and publications in relevant areas. Applicants must excellent verbal and written communication skills.
