Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position investigating liquid crystalline vitrimers and their mechanical actuation at the Cavendish Laboratory (Department of Physics, University of Cambridge, Cambridge). The aim of project is to develop new applications of polymeric materials with thermal and photo-actuating response.

The successful candidate will join the BSS research group, working with Professor Eugene M. Terentjev ( We are looking for an experienced experimental physicist or engineer with a PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or Engineering to lead the laboratory effort developing applications of the new functional polymeric materials, and participate in supervising a PhD student in the same field. Experience in liquid-crystalline elastomers, and/or in vitrimers and mechanical actuators is a significant bonus.

Key duties and responsibilities expected from the successful candidate will include, but not be limited to, conducting individual and collaborative projects, assisting in the supervision of student projects, building internal and external contacts and planning the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops as appropriate. The work will be funded by the ERC Advanced grant 786659: "Active Polymers for Renewable Functional Actuators". Successful candidates who have been awarded their PhD by the appointment date will be appointed as a Research Associate, Grade 7 (£32,236 to £39,609  per annum). The candidate would ideally start in October 2019, or possibly at an earlier date by special agreement.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
