Research Administrator

Wellcome Sanger Institute - Health Data Research UK Cambridge Team

Contract Length: Until 31st March 2023 in the first instance

The Opportunity:

We have an opportunity to join the Health Data Research UK Cambridge team in this new role, to provide operational support to this consortium. The role will be based at the Wellcome Sanger Institute on the Wellcome Genome Campus.

About Us:

Formed in April 2018, Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) is the national institute for health data science, comprising 31 universities and research institutes, working collaboratively to make game-changing improvements in people's health by harnessing data science at scale across the UK.

HDR UK Cambridge is based at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and its collaborative partners are:

  • Wellcome Sanger Institute
  • EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute
  • Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • University of Cambridge

About the role:

As the Research Administrator for HDR UK Cambridge, you will provide comprehensive operational support to assist the leadership team in the delivery of the consortium’s objectives and strategy, including:

  • project management of research programmes;
  • grant and budget management;
  • stakeholder management;
  • contract administration;
  • administrative support.

About you:

You will be a motivated individual with significant experience of providing operational support within a complex organisation. Excellent communication skills and flexibility are essential, and you will be comfortable working independently on multiple competing priorities across different areas.

Essential Skills


  • Previous experience of working in an academic research environment, or equivalent.
  • Exceptional organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and manage workload and competing priorities.
  • Significant experience of budget management.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing research programmes and grants, including funding applications.
  • Ability to work in a complex and changing environment, and make measured decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Significant experience of drafting reports, documents and correspondence for a variety of audiences, and at senior level.
