The Carolina Trust is looking for a new member of staff to lead our team at Winston House, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill's London Study Centre, home to study abroad programs and research initiatives across Europe. The Winston House Director is expected to fulfil the following responsibilities:

  • Provide general oversight of Winston House (WH) operations, including maintenance, fiscal management and reporting, academic support, student welfare, client services, and supervision of WH personnel.
  • In consultation with Honors Carolina Director of Global Education and Fellowships, plan and deliver classroom and logistical support for faculty and students based at WH.
  • Maintain the Carolina Trust’s visa sponsorship capabilities and processes.
  • Collaborate with Honors Carolina staff in Chapel Hill to manage and evaluate internship placements.
  • Advance alumni engagement through participation in WH events, internship placements, and philanthropic support.
  • Deliver orientation services to students, faculty, and other users of WH.
  • Maintain risk management plan for WH programmes, including serving as an emergency contact for residents in WH.
  • Supervise daily operation of WH. Duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Opening facility at start of each workday and ensuring that it is staffed through normal working hours and securely closed at the end of business.
    • Consulting with resident faculty, tenants, and others as needed, to arrange for secure after-hours access.
    • Inspecting facility daily to ensure classrooms and public spaces are neat and orderly, all systems are in good working order, and facility meets relevant safety standards.
    • Arrange necessary repairs.
  • Coordinate with Honors Carolina’s Director of Global Education and Fellowships to manage a centralized database of bookings for classes, public events, and other activities in WH, prioritizing UNC events and populations.
  • Coordinate with Honors Carolina staff in Chapel Hill to provide support for WH events.
  • Coordinate and provide support for clients other than Honors Carolina.
  • Provide local orientation and basic concierge services for visiting faculty, alumni, and friends of UNC.
  • Maintain WH as a welcoming hub for all members of UNC community and friends of the university.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree from accredited university
  • Understanding of American university practices
  • Experience in customer-facing Higher Education or commercial environment
  • Practical working knowledge of UKVI Student Visa regulations as pertain to US Study Abroad programs
  • Experience of working with diverse students/young people and range of stakeholders
  • Wide awareness of cultural sensitivity
  • Well-organized and reliable with good judgement and excellent problem-solving skills
  • Experience maintaining student records in discreet and professional manner
  • Budgetary management experience
  • Ability to act on own initiative as well as part of a team
  • Experience in event planning
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience of living/working outside UK
  • Knowledge of and experience with US Study Abroad programming in London
  • A desire to advance university’s presence in London and abroad 

Hours: 8:30-17:30 Monday to Friday (one hour for lunch) with occasional late evening and weekend work as agreed in advance
