Research Associate (413463)

University of Strathclyde - Department of Physics

Location: Glasgow
Salary: £33,309 to £40,927
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 25th November 2021
Closes: 2nd January 2022
Job Ref: 324014

Faculty of Science

Fixed Term (24 months)

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate based at the University of Strathclyde to work on both the UK Quantum Technologies Quantum Computing and Simulation (QCS) Hub on quantum architectures, and the EPSRC funded ExCALIBUR project on Quantum Enhanced and Verified Exascale Quantum Computing (QEVEC).  The projects are complementary, requiring theoretical and computational modelling and evaluation of practical quantum computing, especially for quantum annealing, and noisy, intermediate-scale quantum hardware. You will be one of four PDRAS in the QEVEC team, each with different expertise, working together to develop quantum computing for the main ExCALIBUR use cases (fluids simulations and materials simulations), and methods to validate the hybrid quantum-classical algorithms.

We are seeking a theoretical/computational researcher with a PhD (or equivalent relevant experience) and expertise in quantum computing who is keen to collaborate across discipline boundaries to learn new skills and expertise. You need to be a good team worker and communicator to work closely with computational scientists on how a quantum computer could enhance their existing fluids and materials algorithms.

The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Physics under the supervision of Prof. Viv Kendon, within the Computational Nonlinear and Quantum Optics group at Strathclyde, collaborating with QEVEC team members based at Durham, UCL, and Warwick, and with relevant members of the QCS Hub. You will have a PhD (or be close to completion) in a topic related to theoretical or computational quantum computing, with quantum annealing knowledge an advantage. An ability to prepare scientific publications and present research outcomes at local, national and international research meetings is expected.

The post is available now, with a start date negotiable up to 31st March 2022.

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Prof. Viv Kendon (viv.kendon@strath.ac.uk).

Formal interviews for this post will be held on 14/01/2022.
