Job Summary

We are seeking to recruit an outstanding structural biologist to contribute to an ongoing project in the group of Prof Steve Matthews, Department of Life Sciences. The project focuses on the structural biology based studies to illuminate our current understanding of glideosome-associated connector platform from Apicomplexan parsites, including Plasmodium and Toxoplasma gondii. The research is backed up by a robust combination of biophysical, biochemical and cellular assays. The project is supported by collaborations with structural and cell biologists at Imperial and Geneva University.

Duties and responsibilities:

You will be expected to take a leading role in combining advanced structural biology methods, exploiting the combined power of X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM and NMR, with cellular assays probing this key stage of the parasite lifecycle You will take responsibility for mentoring junior biochemists/structural biologists in our research team. You will also be expected to liaise with collaborating partners.

Essential requirements: 

Research Associate: PhD (or equivalent) in multidisciplinary structural biology, with experience in multiple methods.

Research Assistant: Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in multidisciplinary structural biology, with experience in multiple methods.

You must have a strong research track record in studying protein-protein and protein-membrane complexes preferably demonstrated by first author publications in international journals. Experience in the design and execution of workflow for structure determination of proteins, from molecular biology/biochemical experiments (e.g. DNA cloning and mutagenesis, protein purification) to acquisisation and analysis of structural biology data.

You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to write clearly and succinctly for publication. You must also be able to relate well with others, form positive relationships with a wide range of people and to work as part of a team, as well as independently. The ability to develop and apply new concepts and have a creative approach to problem-solving, to set and attain research objectives in a multidisciplinary team are also essential.

Further Information

This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment available for up to 36 months. You will be based at South Kensington Campus.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded a PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range of £36,694 - £39,888 per annum.
