Department Overview

The rapidly growing department is part of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.  Young and dynamic, the department is home to faculty from more than 10 countries around the world. It delivers a very popular BA Media and Communication Studies program with a rich selection of modules in journalism, digital media, film studies, cultural studies, creative industries as well as practice-based professional skills development modules, and an MA Media and Communication program with two tracks to ensure that different needs of our students are met - the practice-oriented Professional Communication track and the more theory-informed Global Media and China track. Faculty recruit and supervise PhD students in their own research area. Collegial and vibrant, all staff members are committed to research-led teaching and cutting-edge research on journalism, Film Studies, Digital Media, Cultural Studies and practice-based research. 

Responsibilities and Duties

We seek five appointees with active research and excellent teaching profiles at different stages of their career in media and communication studies, specialising in either journalism, digital media, cultural creative industries, film studies, or cultural studies. 

The appointees are all expected of the following responsibilities and duties:

  • Publish high-quality research on media and communication, or practice-based research leading to high-quality outputs in specialized journals/publications
  • Coordinate and deliver courses in the department’s existing programs
  • Supervise the research or practice based projects of undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Advise undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Provide service to the Department, School and University, and the wider scholarly community

Essential Qualifications/Experiences

Senior Associate Professor

  • A completed PhD in Media and Communication Studies, Journalism, Film Studies, Cultural Studies or relevant fields
  • Record of strong leadership in learning and teaching, research and management
  • Evidence of international recognition in the research subject area
  • Outstanding experience of bringing PhD projects to successful completion

Associate Professor

  • A completed PhD in Media and Communication Studies, Journalism, Film Studies, Cultural studies or relevant fields
  • Ability to conduct high quality research activity as evidenced by publication in international peer reviewed journals, research grant income, and supervision of doctoral students to completion
  • Excellent record of teaching and curriculum design in higher education
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues in the Department, School and University.

Assistant Professor

  • A completed PhD in Media and Communication Studies, Journalism, Film Studies, Cultural studies or relevant fields
  • Strong record of teaching in higher education
  • Active in research as evidenced for example by peer reviewed publication and grant income
  • Experience of supervising UG, PG and PhD projects
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues in the Department, School and University. 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE 

  • A certificate in learning and teaching in higher education 

Compensation Package

Range of Annual Base Pay:

Assistant Professor: 360k-400k RMB

Associate Professor: 450k-490k RMB

Senior Associate Professor: 540k-580k RMB

Members of Academic Staff are entitled to subsidies for accommodation, travel, and children’s education, medical insurance, and a one-time relocation allowance is provided. Overseas staff may receive a tax “holiday,” depending on nationality and personal circumstances.

Citizenship and Visa Regulations

Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese Labour Laws, and must comply with the regulations of the provincial government. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment with regard to obtaining work permits and visas.  Please be advised candidates over 65 may be not eligible for a work visa in the P.R. China.
