GSU Communications Officer

Wellcome Sanger Institute

Do you want to help us improve human health and understand life on Earth? Make your mark by shaping the future to enable or deliver life-changing science to solve some of humanity’s greatest challenges.

We are seeking a ideally dynamic and versatile Communications Officer to support communications for the Wellcome Sanger Institute’s new Genomic Surveillance Unit (GSU). The role will focus on the Malaria Genomic Epidemiology Network (MalariaGEN; www.malariagen.net), which is a network of partners in over 40 countries who share genomic data to accelerate the elimination of malaria. The successful candidate will work across teams to find and tell stories that build a sense of community and enhance the reputation of both MalariaGEN and the GSU.

Salary: £37,500 - £45,000

About the Role:

You will work closely with the Communications Lead, members of the GSU, and partners in the global MalariaGEN network to develop and implement a communications strategy. You will promote the integration of genomics into national malaria control programs as well as global health policy more generally. You will be a champion for the community of researchers, public health practitioners, and technologists working to advance genomic surveillance of infectious disease. As part of the role, you will build and maintain strong relationships with key communications stakeholders both internally at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and externally with collaborators.

About you:

With experience in science writing on the web, you will enjoy working in a complex and evolving landscape and finding and promoting stories about people, data, science, and public health. Aside from strong communication skills, you must be highly organised with excellent attention to detail. You will have a flair for establishing a rapport with individuals remotely, and the ability to adapt your approach depending on the intended audience. You would be joining a team that supports personal and professional development and would regularly get opportunities to grow within the role and build your potential.

About the Team:

The Communications Officer and their line manager, the Communications Lead, sit within the MalariaGEN Community Team in the GSU at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. The GSU was established in July 2022 to support partners around the world to understand and track the evolution of infectious diseases. It is focused on generating, analysing, sharing, and interpreting data that are useful for public health. MalariaGEN is a research network, founded in 2005, that creates genetic data resources to support the control and elimination of malaria. The team is going through a period of expansion to support both broadening and deepening engagement activities across the network.
