The Courtauld Institute of Art is the UK’s leading institution for teaching and research in Art History and the conservation of paintings. It is also home to one of the finest small art museums in the world, which reopened to the public in November 2021 following a major transformation. The History of Art department has an outstanding research and teaching record from Late Antiquity to the Contemporary with an increasingly global outlook, and embraces its diversity of theoretical approaches and methodologies.
The Courtauld is seeking to appoint an innovative scholar with a specialism in European art and material cultures in the age of seaborne global expansion, between c.1500 and c.1800. The successful candidate will complement the existing strengths of the History of Art Department and have a research focus in any area of the arts of early modern Europe. The candidate is expected to be able to situate their work in the theoretical and historiographic debates in their specialised research area and to engage with current issues in the discipline of Art History, including decolonial and intersectional art histories. This is an excellent opportunity to develop new directions in the field of early modern European art, with exciting potentials relating to our new strategic relationship with King’s College London.
Teaching at The Courtauld takes a variety of forms, from small-group seminars, lectures, and tutorials, to teaching in front of works of art in galleries and museums both within the UK and internationally. The post-holder will also undertake research, supervise research students, participate in our thriving research community, and engage in activity that increases public awareness of and access to Courtauld resources, including the gallery.
We are seeking to appoint at Lecturer level and especially welcome applications from early career scholars who are starting to establish records in research, publication, curriculum design and/or reform, teaching and academic administration. The appointed academic will play an important role in transforming teaching and research at The Courtauld.
All faculty are entitled to regular sabbaticals from their teaching. In addition, they are encouraged to apply for external grants and fellowships, supported by The Courtauld’s dedicated Research Department.
