About the role:

Our Cancer Biomarker Centre (CBC), led by Prof Caroline Dive CBE, has an international reputation for liquid biomarkers with an overall goal to facilitate cancer precision medicine. Immunotherapy is currently a rapidly expanding research area in oncology and robust and clinically applicable predictive biomarkers of immunotherapy response are required to personalise therapy and optimise benefit.

We are seeking a Scientific Officer 2 to work within the CBC Translational Immunology Laboratory, on the Cancer Precision Medicine Theme of the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre. Working with a team of scientists you will undertake the processing of blood and tumour samples, to develop and analyse biomarkers to predict and monitor immune status and response to therapy. Biomarkers will include inflammatory markers, cytokines and immune lymphoid/myeloid cell populations analysed using techniques such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Fluorescent-Activated Cell Sorting (FACs), T-cell receptor sequencing and immune gene expression analysis. You will work with other CBC staff to process and characterise samples from clinical trials with full training and supervision provided, including guidance on regulations relating to Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

About you:

You should have a degree in biology, biochemistry, immunology or medical sciences (or equivalent relevant experience) and have experience of a range of assay techniques including techniques such as FACs, ELISA, tissue culture, RNA extraction and gene expression analysis.

Relevant experience working in a cancer and/or immunology research setting and experience in processing/analysis of clinical samples is desirable. Previous experience in a Good Clinical Practice (GCP) environment and/or in a clinical setting and knowledge of computer databases in a laboratory setting, e.g., Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) would also be advantageous along with presentation skills.

You will have good written skills and be computer literate. You should be motivated, organised and willing to work as part of a large multidisciplinary team and possess key qualities which include independent thinking and good communication skills.

About Manchester Biomedical Research Centre

The National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) funds Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) as experimental medicine centres of excellence via competitive application every five years. Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) has recently been renewed to provide experimental medicine infrastructure funding across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and South Cumbria.

Contracted by the NIHR, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) host the BRC in partnership with the University of Manchester and also with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
