The role
This is an exciting postdoctoral position to work on a joint project between the University of Bristol and the European Centre for Disease Control on the interplay between COVID-19 and other communicable diseases. The purpose of the role is to quantify the impact of social distancing restrictions, changing healthcare seeking behaviour, vaccine uptake and other effects of the COVID pandemic on the epidemiology of other infectious diseases. A focus of the work will be on varicella (chickenpox) dynamics, but with extensions to other relevant diseases. The post holder will develop infectious disease models, incorporating knowledge of the pathogen biology and social contact data in order to inform any public health response.
The position will be based in the infectious disease modelling group in Population Health Sciences and work closely with researchers in Engineering Maths at Bristol and the team at ECDC. The position is currently funded for 14 months in the first instance. Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Ellen Brooks-Pollock: Ellen.Brooks-Pollock@bristol.ac.uk
What will you be doing?
You will be developing disease transmission models for the post-COVID era and applied to EU member states. We will focus on diseases that have the greatest impact across Europe, where there is the potential to change policy. You will be using infection and social contact data from across Europe.
You should apply if
You are fascinated by infectious disease dynamics and would like to conduct policy-focused, impactful work. We are looking for someone with excellent quantitative skills, ideally with experience handling and manipulating data and developing models in C and R and that has excellent communication skills.
