Location: Bristol
Salary: £35,333 to £39,745 per annum (pro rata if part time)
Hours: Full Time, Part Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 23rd January 2023
Closes: 19th February 2023
Job Ref: ACAD106584

The role

This post is an excellent opportunity for a Medical Statistician with a keen interest in randomised controlled trials to develop their career and join the statistics group at Bristol Trials Centre – a successful UKCRC-registered Trials Unit. The main purpose of the job is to contribute to our portfolio of high-quality clinical research, particularly the statistical aspects of the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of pragmatic RCTs.

The Bristol Trials Centre has a multi-disciplinary team of methodologists including statistics, health economics and social science expertise, as well as associated clinical, academic, coordinating and administrative staff involved in trials activity. We currently have around 50 public health, primary and secondary care trials at various stages, with statisticians fully recognised for their contributions as members of the multi-disciplinary teams delivering these trials.

We benefit from being part of the vibrant research environment at the University of Bristol Medical School, working closely with other research groups based there, and in the university more widely. Bristol Medical School has particular strengths in analyses that accommodate missing data, causal analyses, and evidence synthesis in addition to the analysis of pragmatic RCTs.

What will you be doing?

Under supervision of a senior statistician, you will be involved in the conduct, analysis and interpretation of the statistical aspects of funded trials and writing up the results for publication in high impact journals. Support will be provided by senior statisticians and you will be encouraged to stay abreast of current statistical practice and attend appropriate training courses and conferences.

You should apply if

It is expected that you will have (or soon be graduating with) a Masters degree (or equivalent relevant experience) or in Medical Statistics or closely related discipline, and experience of working with and conducting analyses of substantial datasets (e.g. during your MSc dissertation). Experience of working on RCTs is not essential; however, your application should demonstrate your interest in developing an academic career in designing RCTs and applying statistical methods to the analysis of RCT data. Bristol Medical School offers excellent professional development through the short course programme in research methods. You will need enthusiasm, excellent numeracy and writing skills and be keen to work within multi-disciplinary teams to develop and conduct high quality research. The School has an excellent track record of attracting research funding. If, in the longer term, you are interested in applying for a fellowship to pursue their own research interests, members of Bristol Trials Centre (and wider department) can provide expert guidance and support.

We are keen to recruit an individual with clear potential to develop their skills and knowledge of statistical analysis for RCTs in this post.
