The Philosophy department in the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Assistant on a full time, fixed term basis.

The Opportunity:

We seek to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant as part of the Enabling a Responsible AI Ecosystem programme funded by the UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council. This £3.5 million multidisciplinary programme is co-directed by Prof Shannon Vallor (Philosophy) and Prof Ewa Luger (Design Informatics), in collaboration with the Ada Lovelace Institute.

The programme team draws together expertise in Applied Ethics, Design, Human-Data Interaction, Law, Health, Art and Art Practice, Journalism and Artificial Intelligence. The post-holder will support the programme’s ambition to promote the growth of an AI ecosystem that is responsible, ethical, and accountable by default, by leveraging the arts and humanities to strengthen and diversify the existing foundation of responsible AI research, policy and practice.

Please note that the ideal start date of the role is March or April 2023.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • PhD in a relevant subject area, or equivalent professional qualification with relevant post-graduate research experience (pending assumed completed can be considered)
  • Current knowledge of the relevant research field, in particular the emerging ethical, legal and policy issues related to AI research, development and use
  • Extensive research experience in the ethical and responsible development, use and/or governance of AI, data or other information technologies
  • The ability to carry out research across multiple disciplines and knowledge sectors, as part of a complex programme with multiple partner organisations and external stakeholders
  • Ability to clearly communicate multidisciplinary research to diverse academic and non-academic audiences through written and oral presentations
  • Excellent time management, problem solving and organisation skills.
