The Isaac Newton Institute (INI) is a national and international visitor research centre running programmes on selected themes across the whole of the mathematical sciences, with applications in a very wide range of societal, scientific and technological areas. It attracts 2500 leading scientists per year, both from the UK and overseas, to interact on research over extended periods.
The Newton Gateway to Mathematics is the impact/knowledge exchange (KE) initiative of INI, developing programmes of work and activities covering numerous scientific areas. Work undertaken in support of this includes translation and dissemination of mathematical sciences to wide audiences, and brokering relationships between contacts for the purposes of stimulating future research and collaboration. Most activities are based at the INI and adjacent Centre for Mathematical Sciences, whilst some events are held at locations across the UK.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Development and Communications Coordinator to provide technical research and knowledge exchange support to the Gateway and INI, involving scientific exploration and analysis of the research programmes and related activity, in particular the translation and dissemination of scientific details and information to a broader audience, including:
The post holder will initiate and maintain connections between the mathematical sciences and the users of maths, eg. external partners and stakeholders from industry/business, policy makers and research funding bodies including the Research Councils, as well as other academic institutions.
This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop a comprehensive overview of mathematical sciences research and KE activity undertaken across the UK as well as build an extensive network of contacts within both academia, industry and government. This position would be ideal for someone with an interest in KE within the mathematical sciences is looking to expand their understanding of current activities and develop academic and industrial contacts within this field.
Applicants will need a first degree in the mathematical or other physical sciences discipline, along with a good pass English GCSE or equivalent. Whilst a knowledge of mathematics is a key component of this post, the post holder needs to have a passion for communications, and be able to act in the role of science communicator. Experience in a similar research/analyst/communications type role is preferred. The post holder will need excellent interpersonal skills with a confident and pro-active approach to dealing with people at all levels of seniority. They will be required to work independently as well as being part of a team.
This post is fixed-term for 12 months or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier.
