Oxford Brookes University is looking to recruit an experienced, reliable and highly motivated Clerk of Works as a member of the Projects team. To inspect workmanship, quality, safety and advise on good practice for either the Construction of a Student Accommodation Village, or an Academic Building with specialised automotive engine test cells. The Projects Team plays a proactive role within a motivated and innovative Department, delivering key objectives to meet directorate and university wide requirements. Working hours for the post of :

This is a full time post which is 37 hours, typically Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm, but Oxford Brookes is supportive of flexible working, part time working and job sharing. Overall Purpose of the post of Clerk of Works

To supervise the on site construction (especially the building, services and civil engineering elements) and/or other works, for the purpose of ensuring proper use of materials and quality of workmanship to achieve the design. Be responsible for inspecting construction work to ensure it meets all relevant standards and health and safety requirements and through advice improve the quality of delivery.

Qualifications and Experience for the post of Clerk of Works

Qualifications: A relevant trade or construction based City & Guilds/NVQ qualifications such as NVQ level 3 in a construction-relate subject (e.g. construction, building, facilities, engineering) is preferred;

Experience required for post:

  • Demonstrable experience of acting in a supervisory capacity on construction sites.
  • Appropriate up to date training record for Construction based Subjects, such as SSSTS, CSCS, and First Aid.
  • Have knowledge and be able to apply construction related health & safety legislation generally, including the CDM Regulations 2015, Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and Working at Height Regulation 2005.
  • Demonstrate good IT skills and be able to formulate detailed site reports.
  • Understand technical drawings and anticipate problems before they arise on site.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
  • One post is specifically seeking an applicant with student accommodation, mid rise housing or hotel experience.
  • One post is specifically seeking an applicant with a high degree of knowledge and experience of complex mechanical and electrical installations.
