Career Development Fellowship in Law

University of Oxford

Location: Oxford
Salary: £43,414 to £51,805 (with a discretionary range up to £56,592) per annum, plus other benefits
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 16th March 2023
Closes: 17th April 2023

Christ Church is seeking to appoint a Career Development Fellow in Law, from 01 September or 01 October 2023, on a full-time, fixed-term basis for 5 years. This Career Development Fellowship is intended for an early-career scholar who wishes to further their experience of undergraduate teaching in Law alongside their research.

The successful candidate will share in the teaching of Law at undergraduate level in Christ Church with the two Official Students in Law, Edwin Simpson (who teaches Trusts, Jurisprudence, Taxation and Justice, Taxation Law, and Trusts and Global Wealth Taxation) and Ciara Kennefick (who teaches Contract Law, Land Law, Roman Law, History of English Law, Comparative Law and Modern Legal History), and other College lecturers as appropriate. The post-holder will also undertake advanced, original and independent research. The areas in which candidates propose to undertake research should be connected to at least one of the subjects in which teaching is offered.

The Fellowship is a College appointment and does not carry appointment to any post within the University. However, it is expected that the person appointed will be made a member of the Law Faculty, and there may be opportunity to take part in Faculty teaching. The person appointed will not be a member of the Governing Body of Christ Church.

The role is offered on a full-time basis, with a salary on a scale from £43,414-£51,805 (with a discretionary range up to £56,592) per annum, plus other benefits.

The Governing Body has a policy of fostering academics’ career-development by means of Career Development Fellowships. In order to achieve a flow-through of appointments so that this policy can, as circumstances permit, be continued into the future for other academics’ career-development, it is an essential feature of this Fellowship that it is time-limited and cannot be renewed.  Therefore, the appointment carries with it no expectation of permanent employment at Christ Church.

Applicants should have evidence of the skills needed for higher education teaching in tutorial and small group settings, a research record commensurate with the stage of their career; and have a Bachelor of Arts (First Class or very high 2.1) or equivalent in Law and be close to completing, or have completed, a higher degree in the subject, such as the BCL, LLM or a doctorate.

Further particulars, including instructions about how to apply, may be downloaded from www.chch.ox.ac.uk/vacancies. The deadline for applications is noon on Monday 17th April 2023.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in academic posts at Oxford.

Entry into employment with Christ Church and progression within employment will be determined only by personal merit and the application of criteria which are related to the duties of each particular post and the relevant salary structure. In all cases, ability to perform the job will be the primary consideration. No applicant or member of staff shall be discriminated against because of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation.
