The College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences is a research-intensive college comprising seven academic departments delivering education programmes to over 5000 students. We are seeking a proactive and experienced individual to join our team as Principal Technical Manager. In this position you will play a leading role in the effective functioning of technical facilities supporting teaching and research in Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical and Civil Engineering. In this diverse and interesting role, you will lead a team of approximately 15 technical staff supporting research, scheduled practical teaching and student projects.
The successful applicant will have significant experience in leading and planning technical activities within an education or industry context, and have the ability to manage, develop and motivate staff. As an established engineer, you will have a good understanding of the health and safety regulatory environment, and a detailed working knowledge of risk assessment and control measures relevant to engineering. Demonstrable experience of planning developing new engineering facilities - from both an operational and safety perspective - would be an advantage.
Strong analytical and communication skills are essential for this post, as is the ability to exercise influence and diplomacy. You will need to build credibility and strong working relationships with Heads of Department and other senior colleagues, and have the ability to plan and manage change in a dynamic stakeholder environment. A background in Higher Education may be an advantage but is not essential.
