The Department of Arts and Humanities is seeking to recruit a new permanent team member to become part of the Division of Transdisciplinary Studies in Global Change: Lectureship in Global Challenges – Social Cohesion Pathway Lead.
Global Challenges is a major focus of transdisciplinary study and research area in the university. The Division currently consists of a core undergraduate programme (BASc Global Challenges) with four pathways in Planetary Health, Security, Social Cohesion and Global Innovation. The programme draws upon the expertise of multiple staff from every College in the institution to create a trans-disciplinary learning and research experience for students. Students are introduced to and develop knowledge and understanding of key concepts and frameworks needed to respond to multi-dimensional and systemic challenges faced by the contemporary world and our global community. Students learn to integrate and respond in theoretical and practical ways to issues that impact systems of community, environment, and the economy at a local, national and international scale.
Social Cohesion: The social cohesion pathway explores the impacts of globalisation on human connectedness and well-being; enablers and disruptors of social cohesion; identity and community formation, and how the media both shapes and reflects social group identities and cohesion. These topics can be approached from a range of disciplinary perspectives. The successful candidate will be working closely with colleagues in the social sciences and humanities as well as with the core Global Challenges team. Ideally you will also have some experience of teaching qualitative research methods as well as one or more of the following areas ANOVA, GIS/QGIS, R-programming, Excel and basic statistical methods.
We are seeking to recruit an inter-disciplinary scholar who have an established track record in one field and has clear ambitions to develop their trans-disciplinary capacity. The appointee would demonstrably be able to broaden our research and teaching in any field that links to the challenges associated with the broad thematic area of social cohesion. The appointment is from July 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The appointee will join the established research and teaching team. They will also be expected to participate in at least one of the research centres and/or hubs in any one of the Colleges or a University Research Institute.
More information about the Programme can be found on the website: https://www.brunel.ac.uk/global-challenges
Informal enquiries can be made to the Head of Arts and Humanities Ms Meretta Elliott or the Programme Director, Mandekh Hussein.
Closing date: Tuesday 11th April 2023 (Midnight)
