The Department of Public Health, Policy and Systems is seeking to appoint an accomplished and highly motivated public health researcher to join an active and thriving academic environment contributing to flagship research and teaching programs run by the Department. You should have demonstrable expertise in environmental health/ public health and will work closely with the Energy, Air Pollution and Health Research Group (EAPH) on an exciting program of research, health systems strengthening and capacity building addressing the burden of disease from air pollution in sub-Saharan Africa.
We are specifically seeking a candidate with experience of conducting epidemiological research on clinical outcomes/ symptoms that are affected by the wider determinants of health. The post will also have an active teaching contribution to successful Masters programs in Public Health (MPH) and Health Data Science (MSc), leading modules on epidemiology and statistics in public health, as well as joining colleagues in providing public health instruction for the undergraduate MBChB medical curriculum.
A PhD in public health, environmental health/ epidemiology, and expertise in quantitative research methods/ analysis and epidemiology, are essential. You will complement and strengthen research expertise within the Department working with our highly skilled multidisciplinary team conducting leading research in the UK and Globally. You will specifically contribute to world leading research in the field of household air pollution in low and middle-income countries, providing evidence for policies in prevention through adoption of clean fuels and energy. With 3 billion people globally relying on polluting fuels for cooking, heating and lighting and exposure to air pollution from their use leading to 2.3 million premature deaths annually. Our Energy, Air Pollution and Health Research Group is leading the way in addressing this priority.
You will join a productive and enthusiastic team to coordinate research activities and lead analysis and dissemination of critical evidence from comprehensive mixed-methods datasets including air pollution, health outcomes, socio-demographic information and objective data on cooking activities. This dissemination will draw from these multiple datasets providing high impact international publications that will lead the way in field and, therefore, an ability to produce high quality academic papers is a highly desirable attribute for applicants. We aim to disseminate through academic publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journal articles, through high quality policy briefs to ministry-level stakeholders and through innovative methods (e.g. documentaries).
The post has an active departmental teaching contribution to our successful MPH and joining colleagues in providing social science and public health instruction for the undergraduate MBChB medical curriculum. The post will also provide training, supervision and support to MA and PGR students.
The post is available on a permanent tenure basis, with an expected start date of 1 June 2023.
