This role is located within the Careers Network team (CN), which exists to help students and graduates realise the potential of their University of Birmingham experience and degree, helping them to positively shape the world around them, powering possibilities for themselves, and others, throughout their careers. The team comprises circa 60 staff, across several specialist areas, supporting employability, enterprise, and entrepreneurship within and beyond the curriculum, engaging with employers, alumni, and external partners to support this endeavour. Achieving the global ambitions of our university depends on our people - and we are proud of our highly talented and engaged colleagues, who are passionate about ensuring students are at the heart of what we do.
About the role
Work experience is a key service provision within Careers Network (CN) and plays an important part in the University achieving its Employability Strategy. Internships and work experience impact across many strategic areas including graduate employability, student experience and recruitment, and alumni and employer engagement.
The post holder will work with an assigned ‘College team’ (to include guidance professionals, careers information specialists and employer relations staff) to assist in the development of College-based initiatives and to feed back into the wider Work Experience and External Engagement teams.
The role is responsible for promoting a range of internal and external internship programmes; sourcing and generating internship and work experience opportunities for students, building relationships with employers and stakeholders (particularly in the region) and will develop and maintain recording systems/databases to keep records of student activity and participation in work experience.
Roles at this level will require a broad understanding and practical experience of an administrative or professional field which will be used to plan the running and development of services and/or lead shorter term projects or contribute to larger projects. You will work with information which needs interpretation and analysis; you will use your judgement to identify the best solution to differing problems and issues, offering recommendations for managing more complex situations. You will be responsible for managing a member of staff, and a small number of student ambassadors and you will be accountable for developing them and for managing performance. You may also need to liaise and/or coordinate activities across several different sections within the department or possibly with wider departments or external bodies as appropriate.
