Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Molecular Virology

University of Oxford - Sir William Dunn School of Pathology

Location: Oxford
Salary: £36,024 to £44,263 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 18th September 2023
Closes: 16th October 2023
Job Ref: 168132

We are seeking an ambitious and highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the laboratory of Professor Ervin Fodor at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford. The postholder will join a dynamic and successful group studying the fundamental molecular mechanisms of influenza virus replication with the overall aim of understanding the molecular basis of virulence and host-specificity of influenza viruses, ultimately paving the way to the development of novel antiviral approaches. The project will build on recent breakthroughs in our understanding of the structure and function of the influenza virus RNA polymerase (Carrique et al Nature** 2020; PMID: 33208942) which we now wish to examine through a combination of biochemical, biophysical and molecular biology approaches. The project will take advantage of established collaborations with structural biologists and may employ cryo-EM and x-ray crystallography.

The position would suit an enthusiastic and highly organised postdoctoral scientist with an interest in viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerases and transcription and possessing the ability to contribute conceptually to the overall research programme. Candidates with specific interests in the functional analysis of macromolecular complexes using biochemical and biophysical methods are particularly encouraged to apply but we would like to hear also from candidates with a strong background in virology, molecular and cell biology who have interests in virus-host interactions, effects of viral infection on the host cell and host responses to viral infection. Applicants should hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, virology or related sciences. Experience in advanced molecular biology techniques, protein expression and purification and analysis of macromolecular complexes is essential.

If you are interested in the position, and have the skills and experience we are looking for, please apply online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application. The position is funded by the UKRI-MRC and is for a fixed term (until 30 September 2028). Additional information about this post is available from Professor Ervin Fodor (ervin.fodor@path.ox.ac.uk).

The closing date for applications is 12.00 midday on Monday 16th October 2023. Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter.
