Applications are invited for the exciting new role of MPhil Coordinator in the Faculty of Mathematics to provide effective support for the new MPhil/Part III programme in Quantitative Climate and Environmental Science, a joint venture between the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and Earth Sciences, which will admit its first students in October 2024.

The successful candidate will report to the Faculty's Postgraduate Office Manager as part of the team of administrators delivering high-quality support for all aspects of postgraduate education. They will:

  • Work closely with the Directors and key administrators to ensure  appropriate systems and protocols are set up to support the successful planning, implementation and delivery of the programme
  • Have overall responsibility for the programme's day-to-day coordination and administrative delivery, reviewing and developing systems and procedures
  • Provide support to the programme Management Committee
  • Be responsible for recruitment and admissions activities, including student funding
  • Develop a solid understanding of the University's regulations and policy concerning taught MPhils
  • Act as a source of information for academic colleagues and administrators
  • Work collaboratively with a range of colleagues to ensure best practice principles are embedded within administrative processes.

At postgraduate level the Faculty of Mathematics currently offers three doctoral (PhD) programs, two MPhil programs and Part III of the Mathematical Tripos (MMath/MASt). The work of the Postgraduate Office (PGO) covers all aspects of the student journey from recruitment and application, support for course delivery and current students, to examination and award of degree - a busy and varied people-facing workload.

The PGO team is one of the shared services supporting both DAMTP and the Department of Pure Mathematics & Mathematical Statistics and works closely with the shared service teams of IT, HR, and Facilities, two separate Departmental finance teams and many offices and individuals across the University.

You will have:

  • Experience working in an administrative or project management role;
  • The ability to work proactively and autonomously to meet deadlines and deliver tasks within defined timeframes;
  • Demonstrable ability to progress a variety of administrative tasks concurrently;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to build and maintain cooperative relationships at all levels;
  • The ability to thrive in a team environment and the skills needed to interact with a range of professional service staff, administrators, academics and postgraduate students.

Experience of higher education administration, and in particular postgraduate admissions and funding, would be advantageous.
