The UCL Institute of the Americas is a leading multidisciplinary specialist institution for the study of Latin America, the United States, the Caribbean, and Canada. It offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and provides specialist supervision to doctoral level on a wide range of topics and all four main regions of the Americas.

The Institute pursues a research strategy that emphasises cross-regional expertise and a vision of multi-disciplinarity rooted in history and the social sciences. Based on its long-standing reputation for research excellence, public engagement, and impact, the Institute was ranked as the ! number on e Area Studies unit in the UK in REF 2021.

In the last 10 years, the department has grown substantially, both in terms of staff and student numbers, and in terms of the number of applications for large research grants. The consequent development of complexity in the department’s financial and research portfolio has led to the creation of this crucial new role.

About the role

The Finance and Research Officer is responsible for the day-to-day administration of finance and research for the Institute of the Americas. The main aspects of the role are: seeking and promoting internal and external funding opportunities; supporting academics to cost and prepare applications for research funding, ensuring that the financial return for the department is maximised; and managing the department’s processes and data for research, innovation, and consultancy funding.

The post holder will also undertake financial tasks such as monitoring and operating appropriate budgets and approving expenses claims and ! will supp ort the Institute Manager with annual budget proposals and forecasts.

We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible.
This role is eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 40% on site.

About you

You will have knowledge and experience of finance systems and processes, as well as research administration within HE or a similar research environment. Excellent organisational and numeracy skills are vital, as well as the ability to be a proactive team member.
