The Department of Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan is one of the largest in the UK; with 85 members of staff and over 1500 students on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.  It is student centred with a strong focus on teaching excellent research-led criminology and sociology.   The Department is also research-intensive, recently ranked in REF2022 as top 15 for research power.   Our research is applied, empirical, methodologically innovative, and highly cross-disciplinary.  The Department has particular research strengths in policy evaluation, young people and youth justice, and substance use/abuse:  it is home to the nationally recognised Policy, Evaluation Research Unit (PERU), Manchester Centre for Youth Studies (MCYS), Q-Step, and Substance Use and Associated Behaviours (SUAB) research centres. 

About the role: 

The Department of Sociology is looking for a Lecturer in  Criminal Justice Evaluation.

The successful applicant will be based in the PERU research centre, and will support the established work of this centre.   Key tasks will include working with colleagues to:

  • Manage and deliver criminal justice evaluation/research projects commissioned by government departments, charities and other public organisations such as what works centres and local authorities, police;
  • Bid for evaluation/research funding;
  • Write research reports and academic publications
  • Develop and deliver research-led teaching

The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the research and/or knowledge exchange activities of the department for example by producing high-quality research outputs, supervising PGR students, and developing funding bids in the area of criminal justice evaluation and/or research

Based in the Policy Evaluation and Research Unit (PERU) you will support the established work of this centre, working  closely with colleagues to: 

Manage and deliver criminal justice evaluation/research projects commissioned by government departments, charities and other public organisations such as what works centres and local authorities, police;

Bid for evaluation/research funding;

Write research reports and academic publications;

Develop and deliver research-led teaching

About you:

  • A good first degree together with a PhD in a relevant discipline or equivalent relevant experience of criminal justice evaluation and/or research; or policy/programme evaluation in a related area
  • An in depth understanding of the evaluation/research policy/programme subject area including recent developments in the field.
  • Experience of undertaking evaluation/research projects; and/or components of larger evaluation/research programmes;
  • Experience of working as part of a research team;
  • Experience of undertaking qualitative research with: marginalised individuals/service users; practitioners; policymakers;
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with: commissioners; policymakers; service delivery organisations; and service users;
  • Experience of writing research reports for a range of audiences including research commissioners, policymakers and practitioners
  • Ability to integrate qualitative and quantitative research findings;
  • Ability to work to tight project deadlines;
  • A PGCE, Certificate of Education, PGCLTHE or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or an agreed professional equivalent (or commitment to obtain within three years of initial appointment).
  • Ability to teach at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels
