We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Research Assistant to join a growing lab focused on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders. This is an exciting opportunity for a graduate with a BSc or MSc in a relevant subject to contribute to cutting-edge research in neuroendocrine regulation, stress, and psychiatric illness. The role offers the chance to work with zebrafish disease models, explore new therapeutic targets, and gain invaluable experience in experimental techniques such as CRISPR gene editing, in vivo imaging, and molecular biology.
The successful candidate will join the research group led by Dr. Helen Eachus, a new independent investigator at Aston University. The lab's research focuses on understanding how stress affects the brain and behaviour, contributing to the development of psychiatric disease. The lab is well-equipped with state-of-the-art zebrafish facilities, advanced imaging and behavioural analysis technologies, and support for professional development.
This position is an excellent opportunity for a graduate to gain experience in a fast-paced, translational research environment. You will be actively involved in an exciting project exploring new therapeutic targets for psychiatric disease.
This role involves generating genetically modified zebrafish lines using CRISPR/Cas9 to study disease phenotypes, supporting experimental design and implementation, and performing key molecular biology and imaging techniques such as PCR, qPCR, gene editing, and confocal imaging. The post also includes assisting with behavioural assays and endocrine measurements, analysing data, and contributing to general lab operations including record-keeping, supply management, and adherence to health and safety standards.
The role requires ongoing professional development, including relevant training to support both personal growth and that of colleagues. It also involves promoting health, safety, and wellbeing, fostering fairness and trust, championing equality, diversity, and inclusion, and supporting the University's environmental sustainability goals.
