Aston University’s GOC-accredited Master of Optometry (MOptom) programme offers patient-facing clinical experience integrated throughout all stages of the course. In their final year (Stage 4), students undertake a 44-week Clinical Learning in Practice placement, with one day per week dedicated to academic study.
We are seeking two part-time (0.5 FTE) Clinical Fellows to support this important phase of our students' development. This role will focus on remote tutoring, support, and assessment of Stage 4 students, helping them meet the GOC Outcomes for Registration while fostering a professional, inquisitive, and evidence-based approach to optometric practice.
The Clinical Fellow will make a meaningful contribution to the University through their clinical expertise, by enriching the curriculum with real-world relevance and supporting the delivery of an engaging, practice-informed learning experience. They will contribute to new academic initiatives aligned with the Aston 2030 strategy and help expand clinical links that benefit both student placements and research projects. Through their involvement in clinical practice, the Fellow will also support stronger research performance and promote greater engagement with external stakeholders, thereby enhancing Aston’s reputation and reach.
In this teaching-focused role, the Clinical Fellow will contribute across Undergraduate, Master’s and Degree Apprenticeship programmes, delivering high-quality teaching and maintaining their own academic and professional development. They will promote the programme externally by building strong relationships with academic, professional, and industry partners. Working collaboratively within the teaching team, the Clinical Fellow will ensure students and colleagues remain up to date with developments in the profession, supporting the delivery of content that reflects current clinical standards and expectations.
Depending on experience, qualifications, and departmental needs, the Clinical Fellow may also take on course coordination responsibilities.
