Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in Hydrogen position under the supervision of Dr Amirpiran Amiri at Aston University.

The PDRA will join a dynamic research team as part of METASIS 2.0, a new EPSRC-funded collaborative project between Aston University and academic and industrial partners. The project focuses on advancing solid oxide steam electrolysis (SOSE) technology for clean hydrogen production by utilising high-temperature waste heat or renewable heat sources.

As the successful candidate you will contribute to system modelling, life cycle assessment (LCA), and techno-economic analysis (TEA) of tubular solid oxide electrolysis cells and stacks. You will work in collaboration with other partners on the development of advanced materials and modelling approaches to improve cell efficiency, thermal stability, and structural integrity at high operating temperatures. In close collaboration with project partners, you will carry out computational investigations to evaluate system performance, scalability, carbon footprint, and routes to commercialisation / cost reduction.

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher with a strong background in chemical or mechanical engineering). Applicants should have:

  • Proven experience in Solid Oxide Electrochemical Systems (SOEC/SOFC), including cell and Balance of Plant (BoP) modelling.
  • Demonstrated skills in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) tools and methodologies.
  • A track record of high-quality publications and conference presentation.
  • Strong communication and networking skills to work effectively with academic and industrial stakeholders.

Desirable attributes include prior experience supervising research students and involvement in grant proposal writing.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.

The position is based at the Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI) at Aston University and may involve limited travel to project partners or industrial collaborators. The post offers excellent opportunities for career development, including student supervision, research networking, and presenting results at national and international conferences.

This is a fixed-term appointment for 18 months, commencing as soon as possible.
