As our Senior Software Developer you will join a team of 25 engineers working on building new cloud native services and modernising existing applications.

These services, of which some are public facing, are mainly used by University staff and students. Your work will have a significant impact on the reputation of one of the world's leading universities. The new services we develop use modern web architecture standards with APIs and are built and tested using GitLab CI. They run on Docker containers and get deployed to Kubernetes clusters running within cloud infrastructure. We work alongside a User Research and Experience team.

The team has a strong learning mindset and has produced boilerplates (to speed up the creation of new applications and set standards) for the technology stack used by the team: Terraform, Ansible, Python, Django, React, Material UI and Typescript. The team has a DevOps culture and uses Scrum for its day-to-day work, and we have adopted an "open by default" approach to new work and so you can find much of our work to date at

Ideally you will have experience:

  • Designing and solving complex business problems by writing simple, effective code that can be deployed to cloud services.
  • Coding in one/more languages (Python, Typescript) and web frameworks (e.g. django).
  • Writing and collaborating on highly insightful, comprehensive code reviews.
  • Writing and applying unit tests.
  • Working with databases, including both relational databases and NoSQL databases.
  • Gathering customer requirements and creating solutions to meet customer and business criteria with demonstrated ability to use data to influence and drive decisions.

Even better if you have experience:

  • Working with containers.
  • Working in a DevOps environment using cloud technologies (Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, or Azure), CI/CD and configuration management tools.
  • Designing, developing, creating RESTful web services and APIs.
  • Mentoring other developers.

Ideally you will have the following skills:

  • Can learn new skills independently, proactively and is constantly striving to raise technical excellence.
  • Can understand system and software specifications and choose appropriate designs to meet requirements.
  • Can produce simple architectures from complex problems and is able to develop and deliver those designs. Can debug complex problems.
  • Drive and commitment to see activities through to completion meeting deadlines matching pace to the urgency of the situation.
  • Extraordinary in-depth understanding of your asset's architecture, systematically thinking through potential design impacts on other teams and the company.
  • Ability to convince, provide work direction and leadership to colleagues who do not directly report to this role.
  • Excellent understanding of agile practices
  • Has a full-stack ability
  • Passion for innovation and excellence.

The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
